Apple just announced that there will be fewer ‘ducks’ in our texts, with their latest update to the autocorrect feature that will finally let us say what we mean. But our friends to the south should also be aware that they may see fewer ducks this year altogether if they don’t take action now to secure a license.
This is the result of new Manitoba waterfowling regulations now in effect. Non-resident hunters will need to plan ahead this year. Foreigners are required to purchase their license through a draw system, or hunt with a licensed outfitter like Birdtail Waterfowl.
Gone are the days of over-the-counter sales. While it’s a bit of an extra effort, we don’t want anyone to miss out on this year’s season. We always welcome foreign visitors at our comfortable lodging and exceptional waterfowling locales.
If you’re considering travelling to Manitoba this year, it’s best not to wait. You need to apply for a license between June 15 and July 15, 2023. Freelance hunters will be entered into a draw, while those joining a hunt with an outfitter like us will go through an application process. Here’s a bit more information for visitors.
This is a priority-based system in which you’ll be entered into a draw to receive a single seven-day license for this season. As a part of the initial phase in, all draw applicants in 2023 will be successful. Applications will be accepted from June 15 to July 15, 2023 on Manitoba’s elicensing platform only, and successful applicants will be charged $218.25. Find out more here.
There was some good news for anyone who owns property here. Legacy licenses were available to registered Manitoba property owners, shareholders of corporations that own land in Manitoba, or lessees of Crown land, but unfortunately, applications closed on June 1, 2023. You can find out more here.
Not willing to try your luck in the draw, or weren’t successful? Your other option is to join a hunt! Licensed Manitoba waterfowl outfitters have been given an allocation of licenses. Birdtail Waterfowl is pleased to offer this option to foreign visitors.
It’s critical to book your hunt as soon as possible. The province has capped licenses at levels that reflect activity prior to COVID-19 restrictions. Our clients will also still be restricted to one seven-day license. Once we run out of our allotment of foreign licenses, we won’t be able to serve foreign hunters wishing to visit us.
